Bar & Billiard Room
Relive the golden days over exclusive whisky labels and creative cocktails. Once a billiard hall, Bar & Billiard Room is today a bar that offers some 400 hand-selected whiskies, with many limited editions and labels imported just for this establishment. Among them include ones from Scotland, Japan and the US. Lending its influence to the cocktail menu, the single malts have also gone on to inspire whisky-based beverages.
No grand hotel is complete without a formal dining room and that is where Raffles Grill takes pride of place. Contemporary French cuisine is accentuated with Asian elements, made using only the freshest produce available. Equally remarkable is the wine collection, containing outstanding vintages from less renowned winemakers, in addition to noteworthy ones.
First opened in 1923, the elegant fine dining establishment is perfectly maintained with sparkling crystal chandeliers and period furnishing. Tall French windows look out to the Palm Court, flooding the interiors with natural light in the day. With an illustrious history and a myriad of awards bestowed through the years, Raffles Grill is well-regarded for its remarkable cuisine, fine wines and beautiful interiors.
Dining at Tiffin Room is an essential experience at Raffles Singapore. At lunch and dinner, the curry buffet is a hot favourite both with tourists and locals alike. Expect authentic North Indian specialities, including vegetarian curries for non-meat diners. In the afternoon, the restaurant partakes in a classic English tradition and serves High Tea. Delicate morsels are arranged on a tiered tea cosy, while what does not fit is displayed as a buffet. Breakfast too is served at Tiffin Room, featuring a delectable international spread.
Tiffin translates into “a light mid-day meal”. Enjoying it with curry on Sunday was an essential aspect of colonial life in the early 20th century, with Raffles Singapore serving it since 1899. To recognise this tradition, the main dining room was officially named Tiffin Room in 1976.
Home of the Singapore Sling, this two-storey bar located on the second floor of Raffles Singapore is the place where travellers undergo one of the truest rites of passage of travel. While there, sip on the world-famous pink cocktail, created in 1915 by bar captain Ngiam Tong Boon, and toss peanut shells onto the floor - the only place in Singapore where “littering” is permitted. The menu offers a mélange of cocktails and non-alcoholic concoctions, together with traditional pub favourites.
The earthy interiors are inspired by Malayan plantation life in the 1920s. Oriental carpets are overlain on tiled floors and the furniture is traditional stained cane and rattan. A charming timber spiral staircase connects the two levels of the Long Bar with the seating above interspersed with teak lounge chairs.
Tucked away on the side of the grand lobby, and framed by French windows that overlook the lush Palm Court, is Writer’s Bar. Named for the literary luminaries who have written about or resided at the hotel, it is a tribute to individuals the likes of Noel Coward, Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling.
On the menu, an impressive and comprehensive beverage list takes centrestage. Expect premium Scotch, fine wines and spirits, and a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Coupled with unobtrusive service and the tinkle of soft piano music in the background, a visit to Writer’s Bar is the perfect way to inspire the creativity of any wordsmith.
