Relive the glorious days of country music and country line dancing

2 February 2017, SingaporeAscent Group Singapore brings to you Yee-Ha! Singapore, Country Line Dance Festival 2017, a reliving of the glorious days of Country Music and Country Line Dance!!

Join us on Friday, 17 March 2017 with Mel and Rani with the Project INDOPURA band, alongside Matthew and the Mandarins from 6.00pm to 9.00pm at The Pavilion at Far East Square for well-deserved time of chilling and linking up over food and beer, offered by Sunset Bay. Relish and dance while swooning and digging your heels into the parquet flooring to the tunes of country music, while at the same time networking and getting to know more like-minded line dancing enthusiasts from around the area after a long week’s work.

Share experiences, enjoy the live band right in the heart of the Central Business District, form a groupie, or just spend the evening reminiscing the bygone days where Country line dancing was made popular in May 2002 when Singapore was in the Guiness World Records limelight for the award for the most number of people participating in line dancing with 11,967 dancers.

For those of you who want to kick those spurs, come dressed in your Country best on Saturday, 18 March 2017 at the Amphitheatre at Goodman Arts Centre from 3.00pm to 8.00pm for an amazing time of Country Music by Mel and Rani with the INDOPURA band, Matthew and the Mandarins, SALT, and Leonard and the Country Riders, as each song has a corresponding set of funky yet elegant dance moves, suitable for all age group and experience levels. From basic, easy to follow steps for beginners, building up to complicated moves with the more energetic music that will be played out for you on stage. Feeling left out? There will definitely be someone around who will teach you the differences between a heel dig, a grapevine, the weave, Charleston, and more variation of line dancing steps before you decide on stepping into the group of dancers and let yourself free.

Revel in the Line Dancing, games and many other fringe activities around the Amphitheatre of Goodman Arts Centre to keep you on your toes and heels, while you delight your senses with food offerings by La Barca Ristorante. You also stand a chance to win prizes for being the best-dressed participant! You can also form your own group to perform in between acts by signing up as part of the Team Showcase, where up to eight teams will be chosen to strut their signature choreograph on or off stage, depending on their creativity.

Says Singapore’s Mel Ferdinands, the one half of Project INDOPURA (short for Indonesia and Singapura) who will be performing alongside Rani Tofani from Indonesia on both days, “I am really excited about performing with Rani for this festival. Project INDOPURA also features some of the best musicians from both our countries and I know everyone is going to have a great time at the festival.” Mel, a stalwart of the local music scene since appearing on Singapore television in 1971, has been performing for over 40 years, and is the brainchild of Yee-Ha! Singapore – Country Line Dance Festival 2017.

INDOPURA’s other half, Rani Tofani, is an established artiste since 2008 and has since performed extensively all over Indonesia, East Malaysia, Myanmar and Singapore. Rani also hosted her own TV program "Country Vaganza" in Sukabumi, West Java, and is currently a board member of the Country Music Club of Indonesia (CMCI). Rani says, “'It is my pleasure to perform in Singapore for Yee-Ha! Singapore – Country Line Dance Festival 2017. The people here in Singapore are so supportive of this project and I am looking forward to perform with Project INDOPURA.” Mel and Rani are currently writing materials, working on an exciting project encompassing INDOPURA’s debut album and planning on performing in several concerts in Indonesia and in Singapore in 2017.

Yee-Ha with us for this 2-day fiesta of music, friendship and food! Ticket is priced at $40 for 17 March, and $50 for 18 March, both inclusive of complimentary first cover drinks. A special combo price of $80 is also available for those who are keen on purchasing tickets for both days.

Yee-Ha! Singapore Country Line Dance Festival 2017 will be the start of many other dance and fitness programmes organised by Ascent Group Singapore, which aims to showcase the spontaneity of arts and talents; to bring an array of dance forms to the community and to bond dance enthusiasts in Singapore and around the region.

MATTHEW AND THE MANDARINS

Matthew Tan (born 1945) grew up listening to his uncle’s country music collection back in the 50s and cited artists like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as childhood heroes. By the time he finished school in 1961, he formed “Matthew Tan And The Mandarins” with his friends and started playing part time gigs in local hotels, an endeavour that became full time by 1965.

"Singapore Cowboy" has become synonymous with Matthew And The Mandarins, a song that Matthew wrote. Matthew Tan's easy delivery of country and western songs was always enjoyable. In the seventies, they were a rage in Singapore among country music lovers. They were based at The Peacock Lounge, Shangri La Hotel for many years. At the time, because of the booming oil industry in the region, many American oil riggers were based in Singapore and would always turn up to watch the band. But Matthew and The Mandarins also had a local fan base for almost three decades.

Today, Matthew and The Mandarins are still very active in the local music scene and continue to be popular with country music fans in Singapore.

LEONARD AND THE COUNTRY RIDERS

LEONARD AND THE COUNTRY RIDERS was founded 20 years ago by lead singer Leonard De Cotta, a traditional country and western swing artist.

Leonard was raised on a staple of country music from the age of eight and his passion for it grew over the decades. Leonard took up the guitar when he was 12 and then trained his vocal and playing style to stay true to the tradition of country music. When he started performing in public, it resonated with fans of the genre who value songs written from the heart by composers, just like the “good ole days”. It has made Leonard a much sought-after entertainer.

Backed by a group of handpicked country musicians, Leonard & The Country Riders perform a wide variety of music from Classic Country, Western Swing, Rockabilly, Outlaw Country, and hard driving Honky Tonk. The band has a flexible line-up of three, four or five-piece musicians to cater to the needs of events of every size and purpose. They can also supply a full country hoedown and line dance music to get your feet tapping.

Leonard and his band pride themselves in their ability to "bring back to life" the sound and feel of real old country music. It's true country, the way country music is meant to be performed.

SALT

The Band S.A.L.T comprising of Shenton Peters, Adrian Stewart, Leslie Joseph, and Thomas Joseph was formed in early 2016. Though a young band it's members have been in the music scene for more than 2 decades. The music genre covered are tunes from Yesteryear, Rock n Roll, Country, Classic Rock.

The passion for music started at a very young age and over the years playing with different bands we developed a style that suited us very nicely. Every member in the band sings and you get a wide spectrum of music style coming across to the listener. We try to put our twist into the standard songs we play to make it sound refreshing and unique to the listener.

Playing live to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd is why we do what we do and we will continue doing it for as long as we can.
